Zombie Generation: Big Industry & Engineering The New Dumb

An article in today’s New York Times describes a disturbing trend in which children, even without an ADD/ADHD diagnosis, are being prescribed adderall to improve their performance in school. This is especially prevalent in lower-income families where, as the pediatrician who is the focus of the article states, “We’ve decided as a society that it’s too expensive to modify the kid’s environment. So we have to modify the kid.”

And this from a physician who describes ADHD as a “made-up” disorder to begin with. Children as young as three are being diagnosed as bipolar and prescribed powerful mind-altering drugs–Drugs which we don’t understand to begin with, being used on the brains of children which aren’t even remotely close to being fully developed. The US is the most medicated country in the world, and it’s because of a psychopathic pharmaceutical industry and an essential institutional paradox: That in order for the health care industry to thrive we, each one of us a potential customer, must be kept in some relative state of sickness. Therefore, it must violate its own ostensible goal in order to succeed. Instead of treatments being developed to combat disease, disOver Medicated American Kidseases must be marketed to sell treatments. This leads to where we are today: Toddlers being fed potent, mysterious antipsychotics for being too “moody” and youngsters being fed an amphetamine not unlike those used by the Hell’s Angels to fuel depraved hippie-era orgies.

The assault comes from all angles. Flouride, a neurotoxin linked to cognitive impairment, infertility, kidney damage and much more, is pumping through the water supply of countless American cities. Many people shrug off the flouride issue, saying that conspiracy theorists claim that it’s being used by governments to make the population compliant, dumb or sterile. This argument is an inane distraction. The question is not whether or not there is some conspiracy, the question is whether or not it’s a good thing that a toxic chemical is being added wholesale to our water supply. The basis for flouridation, of course, is that it’s helping our teeth, but at what cost, and why isn’t brushing with flouride enough? What cumulative effects result from a lifetime of ingesting small daily amounts of flouride? According to many studies on mammals, the unintended consequences could be disastrous. Dumping a known toxin into the water supply is an extreme measure, in my view, to combat tooth decay. Shouldn’t we be examining the potential unintended consequences as closely as we possibly can before force-medicating entire cities’ worth of humans?

Born playing with tablets instead of building blocks, fed toxic chemicals, bizarro GMOs and high-fructose posion and stuffed with enough pharmaceuticals to make Hunter S. Thompson’s head spin, and what can we possibly expect but a chemically and electronically-engineered Zombie Generation? A New Dumb with no independent thoughts, a total inability to look deeply into just about anything at all and a blind, unquestioning acceptance of the world as it is?

And if you haven’t looked into the GMO issue, allow your research to start right here with this fact: Michael Taylor,  former Vice President of Monsanto, was made Food Safety Czar under President Obama. GMOs are allowed in American food products and appear in 70-some odd percent of the packaged foods you see in the market. Many studies funded either directly or indirectly by Big Agro/Biotech have declared them safe, while thousands of independent studies have indicated they may be killing us bite-by-bite. When heads of Big Agro corporations are put into top posts of the FDA, the FDA cannot possibly be expected to do its job.

And ah-hah! Diseases GMOs may contribute to would certainly be a boon to the pharmaceutical/healthcare industry. It’s a perfect example of how industries feed each other, uniting in a destructive and self-perpetuating matrix. Buying off legislators is easy, so it’s easy to maintain the cycle. Your politicans will not help you–they have already tasted the cash, and they have already chosen sides.

It is up to us, and only us, not to buy in when what we’re being sold is poison. But first we have to look more deeply into such essential, basic aspects of our life as the food we eat and the water we drink. There is no one-pill solution. The problem, and the solution, are nothing more than the choices we make.

Are we creating the “zombie generation?”

  2. Too many Americans prefer to do whatever is easiest in an attempt to solve a problem. Makes them feel they are trying to fix it even if they know for a fact it will be ineffective or only a temporary solution at best.
