This is one of those things you just have to keep reading, waiting and praying for some hint of satire. But this isn’t The Onion.
“Quality of Life” laws in Columbia, North Carolina cover things like public urination and homelessness, and now, when caught in violation of these laws, you’ve got a new option other than going to jail. Sounds pretty good! Your new choice is to be removed from the city and taken to a closed camp outside of town, out in the boondocks. It’s not “jail,” but you can’t leave without a special appointment, and if approved to leave, you are shuttled in a van under close guard and then returned to the camp afterwards.
I guess they’re sick of looking at homeless people in Columbia, so they figure, instead of figuring out how to solve the economic problem of skyrocketing have-nots begging for food on every corner, they’ve opted to “disappear” the problem by coercing the homeless (and anyone caught peeing behind a dumpster, apparently,) into camps out in the middle of nowhere.
“The homeless would then be offered a choice by the officers: Go to jail for homelessness or be shuffled to a 240-bed, 24 hour shelter on the outskirts of town which they wouldn’t easily be allowed to leave.” (http://money.msn.com/now/post–columbia-sc-to-exile-its-homeless)
Problem is, they have a lot more homeless than 240, but hey, at least they can make a couple hundred of these annoying poor people disappear. Anything to hide the ugly problem, because actually solving it would take just a little more work and thought than we’re willing to put ourselves through.
“Once at the shelter homeless people won’t be allowed to leave the premises. Officials plan to post an officer on the road leading downtown to ensure homeless people don’t walk towards the area. To leave the shelter, visitors need to set an appointment and be shuttled by a van.” (http://www.upi.com/Odd_News/Blog/2013/08/21/South-Carolina-approves-plan-to-exile-its-homeless/4741377095339/)
Today the homeless and the public pissers, tomorrow, your family – after all, in our modern Parasitocracy, more debt-strapped Americans every day are one hiccup away from financial ruin. Who goes to the camps next?
When the Parasitocracy implodes in earnest and the elite are scrambling to retain order, it’s The Joneses.
The infrastructure and precedents are being set today so that tomorrow, a systemic “Big Reset” can be dealt with in the only way that’s left – force. And then, all of the sudden, though no one knows quite how or when it happened, the camps are a ghetto for the 99%. I just hope they have outlets to keep my iPhone charged, and Arts n’ Crafts for the kids.
Seemed like a good idea when they cleaned the homeless off the streets.
“Stop, citizen – you are in violation of quality of life statutes. You are not technically under arrest, but you must go to the camp.”
Well well well…color me Stalin. Never forget, even under Uncle Joe’s regime, it was all done “legally,” usually under the pretense of a special “Emergency Response” to pressing societal problems. Columbia’s democratically-elected council voted unanimously to create the camp as part of their “Columbia Cares” emergency measures to deal with homelessness.
You asked for it, you got it…suck on that, Mr. Jones!
